What’s an Enrolled Agent (EA)?

“Enrolled Agent” (EA) is the highest credential awarded by the IRS and the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

An EA is a federally authorized tax practitioner empowered to represent taxpayers in all administrative levels including filing tax returns or assisting with audits, collections, and appeals.

Unlike CPAs or Tax Attorneys who are state licensed, and are experts in accounting and law, EA’s specialize in tax matters and are licensed directly by the federal government, allowing them to practice in all states.

— When we meet to discuss your tax project, I will be able to give you a price estimate based on how many forms are required for filing. Extra charges could come into play if additional accounting work is needed for businesses or more than two state returns need to be filed. In most cases, my prices are lower than most big tax companies charge and sometimes lower than DIY prices.

— Changing information after a tax return has been filed generally needs an amended return. If an amended return is needed for a tax return we worked on due to information being left out or changes received after filing, a reasonable hourly fee will be charged to make the changes and refile. If the original tax return was not done through this service, an additional charge to reproduce the original tax forms will be charged.

— It usually takes a few days to complete a tax return once all the necessary information has been received. I only work on a few tax returns at one time. While I try to make sure all returns are filed as quickly as possible, close to deadlines, there may be less open availability.

My best advice is to plan ahead and submit materials early. If it is close to a deadline in March or April, be sure to request an extension in case things stretch out beyond the tax deadline. If you are still waiting on K-1s from business returns close to a deadline, be sure to request an extension.

— Individual tax returns can be signed using electronic signature. The service used for electronic signature includes KBA verification (questions to validate identity).
